Consumers should follow basic guidelines when choosing toys for children, according to the Toy Industry Association (TIA).

TIA Vice President, Standards and Toy Safety, Joan Lawrence, says when deciding on a toy, parents and others should check the age labeling on the product, to match it with the age of the child. After bringing a new toy into the home, Lawrence advises reviewing the instructions with the child and demonstrating how to properly play with the item. For toys already in the home, the non-profit organization has set up a Web site and toll free number where users can find tips and information on specific products or safety issues.

The toll-free number, 1-888-88-4TOYS, is a 24-hour dedicated center for consumers with questions regarding specific products or issues relating to toy safety.
