Seriously, I’ve had someone at work find some old floppies and attempt to use them in their laptop. It took a good hour for me to dig it out of the CD-ROM drive.

That kind of implies all females are ignorant to technology. I’m a woman, and I’m computer smart.. Really not that funny when you direct it just towards females.

I agree with Rachel and I’m a guy. This joke is really sexist.

——————-

It actually implies that (from the look of her) under 25 year olds wouldn’t have a clue what to do with a 5.25″ floppy disk. The mere fact that she’s female implies nothing except that a girl probably wouldn’t try a trick this mean on her boyfriend.

Computer smart people don’t use the term computer smart, either.

February 10th, 2008 @7:41 pm

Lol, I think she called a friend with an old 2×86 to see the pictures!

February 10th, 2008 @7:42 pm

Under 25 year olds? Im 16 and i know how floppies work and how to use them, maybe you mean 10 years and younger….floppies arent THAT old.
lolz@ the computer smart, :P i totally agree.

February 10th, 2008 @7:53 pm

Yeah but the 5 1/4 are a bit older and havent been used in about 15 years.

February 10th, 2008 @8:14 pm

Candy – Um, I don’t know where you’ve been brother, but I’ve been using CD-R’s for over 10 years and haven’t touched a floppy in over 12. That’s damned old when it comes to technology.

February 10th, 2008 @8:14 pm

This would fail horribly on my desktop. It has a 5.25″ floppy drive that’s relatively easy to use in Ubuntu. The only trouble might be not realizing that you have to push the retention clip down for the computer to read the floppy.

BTW, I do have a reason for putting that floppy drive in my computer: I wanted to get a bunch of games off an older (286, MS-DOS 5.30 I think) computer.

February 10th, 2008 @8:14 pm

Candy = Crash

Sorry, I messed up the 1st time.

February 10th, 2008 @8:18 pm

Yea, the 5 1/4″ was popular in computers before 1987. You want to really confuse someone, see if you can dig up an 8″ disc somewhere. Of course you can always give ‘em an audio tape – didn’t they use that in the Commodore 64. LOL, that was my first “computer” if you can call it that. Mine was top of the line though, I actually had the floppy instead of the tape drive.

WOMEN ARE DUMB!

OhForTheLoveOf
February 10th, 2008 @9:39 pm

Rachel – It doesn’t “kind of imply” – It implicitly implies that women are dumb, which isn’t very uncommon in misogynistic tech circles.

Ebony – If you want it to mean “under 25″ then the caption should imply that instead of making it a gender issue.

And assuming that a the tech savvy would never use the phrase “computer smart” is both ignorant and elitist, and I am impressed that you managed to be both at once. Judging from the caliber of comments on most tech boards, many tech savvy individuals are in no danger of being Mensa candidates… if their grammar and communication skills are any kind of reliable indicator.

February 10th, 2008 @10:09 pm

Women aren’t dumb. They are just not typically as tech savvy. That isn’t an opinion, though, so you can save your offended emotions for some other discussion. Women are *statistically *not as tech savvy. It doesn’t have anything to do with how smart they are, it has to do with the inanimate, unemotional nature of computers. Unless the computer is being used for an MMORPG, it’s really rare for a female to care diddly squat about what a 5 1/4″ floppy disk is, and why this joke would be funny.

mountain out of mole hill. its was kinda funny it would be funnier if it was a real video of a real naive girl attempting to read the floppy

TiredOfInequality
February 10th, 2008 @10:25 pm

Computer science and technology degrees in general are *strongly* dominated by males. If this is an indicator of anything, it is that males have a stronger inclination to pursue an advanced degree in a technology related field. This directly reflects back on the population – it is more likely that a man is going to be computer literate than a woman is.

Feminists will say that this is because women are steered away from the field, but this absolutely not true. More opportunities exist for women in the field than for men because institutions are trying to increase enrollment of women. The result of this is that they accept women that are less qualified or skilled and are offered more financial assistance. If I was a woman, I would be going to school for free instead of paying $30,000 a year in tuition. Schools also create programs that are specifically tailored to be more attractive to women. Even so, women are *still* not enrolling in technical programs at institutions of higher education.

The opportunities are there, the interest from women in general isn’t. Shut the f*** u* about misogyny – things are steering hard toward the field being accommodating for women at the expense of equality regardless of gender. Feminists always cry out for gender equality, but we hit that ten years ago. Now men are at a disadvantage, and yet we still have to read comments like the gems OhForTheLoveOf leaves behind.

Promote gender equality: give men the same opportunities women are granted

February 10th, 2008 @10:55 pm

@Graham.. that “code” is horrible, I mean, it lacks semantics, and also, you could surely save time by comparing the direct input for either the rachael or fail variables.. furthermore, you’re doing it wrong.. I mean something like
if rachael.success == false then women = “dumb” end, or
women = “dumb” if rachael.success == false to save and “then” and “end”.
granted, you would have to switch to ruby, but it could still have been done in one line of OOP’d C/C#/C++/Java/.. which is the way to go for whatever messed up application you’re writing.. I mean, you only have one line in the if.. you don’t even need the brackets..
really, man.. you can do better..

February 10th, 2008 @11:37 pm

@Rachel — your complaint implies that men can only use women in an emblematic way. It is possible that the picture that he had had a girl in it (in fact likely, being that there is such a picture in the post), or that he actually tried the trick on his girlfriend. Your assumption is that sexism exists in the posters mind because he is a man talking about women, and that is sexist. Women complain about real men and men complain about real women all the time. It doesn’t become racism or sexism until it becomes general.

Come on. My girlfriend is smarter than that. I didn’t find this funny, rather found it slightly offensive. Seems you’re making fun of an entire gender here.

Misogynist
February 11th, 2008 @12:18 am

Nothing in this joke implies that ALL women would act this way. Anyone who thinks that’s what this is saying is “projecting,” ie placing their own feelings on others. Thus, those who jump to conclusion that this joke is making fun of all women, are already thinking that all women can’t figure out how to use floppies. Hence, those who think this joke is sexist are really the sexists, and those who think this is funny are those who say, “Gee, I did once date ONE girl who didn’t understand computers. That’s kinda funny.”

This is the end of all sexist/racist/–ist jokes whatsoever. The are jokes and do not say anything about gender, race, etc. until the reader/viewer/whatever thinks that’s what they are all about.

BTW, try telling your girlfriend that she needs to put winter air in her tires. Oh sh*t, I don’t want to sound sexist. I meant, boyfriend. Oh wait, that’s still ’sexist.’ I meant, friend. Oh wait, now it appears I’m implying that all of human kind lacks the necessary skills or knowledge to understand this. F**k. Okay, wait. I got it: for a good laugh, trying blarging to your %$^*(* from Planet Zagagfranon that it needs to put xenon amplifiers in its trans-galaxy-anator. There. No one on Earth should be offended by my joke.

You are all idiots.

hey kiddos, do you remember the punch cards and hoppers? now that’s old. the reason it is called ‘de-bugging’ is when an insect got in the machine and blocked the light from shining through the punch cards we had to take it apart and clean the bug guts off the glass.

hey ladies, lighten up or just get a thicker skin, it’s a funny pic.

February 12th, 2008 @7:52 am

lol @ programming
btw rash, you would have to create a success method to determine whether or not she failed, so there lies more coding… I believe graham got it about as short as you could’ve written it, although if it was java he would’ve needed the braces after the if statement… Maybe if it was in C++, then you don’t need extra braces for a single line if statement, but still…

I may not be a woman but I find that this is really sexist. He says “take a picture of YOUR girlfriend.” with the assumption that your girlfriend, being a woman, will also be stupid.

And that’s why it’s so hilarious.

Scott
February 15th, 2008 @2:53 pm

This isn’t sexist, it’s just generally true. Girls generally aren’t good with computers. It’d be like saying guys don’t know shoe designers…. We don’t, and frankly we don’t care either. Not saying there can’t be those that break the generalization, since I’m sure there are some guys out there who do know shoes, and obviously a vocal presence of girls who consider themselves ‘computer smart’, but that doesn’t make the generalization wrong.

Lighten up.

Shane
February 15th, 2008 @11:00 pm

Seriously. WTF. Okay. It’s a joke. Funny, people tell dumb blond jokes and no one starts up a riot. Personally I find it rather amusing, primarily due to the fact that floppy disks are so old in comparison to where technology is now, and when they were used, computer science was still primarily dominated by males, it doesn’t remain that way, but hey, some things change, and some things don’t. Have a drink or something and calm down. Stop trying to interpret EVERYTHING to some sick twisted agenda to prove that men are out there to be sexist and all that non-sense. It is 2008 people, start acting like it.

Michael
February 16th, 2008 @2:11 am

I think the thing to realize here in this whole sexist debate. Is that this wouldn’t even work toward the majority of men. If you give the floppy to a computer illiterate guy, telling him there are pictures of him on it, he’ll try for a minute and then give up. Most guys don’t care as much about pictures as girls do.
Secondly, if you know your girlfriend is computer guru, you obviously wouldn’t do this to her. The problem is that everyone is reading too much into this.

As Scott said “Lighten Up”.

Or simply take it and smack my boyfriend with it.
